"Why Legolas? Why him indeed? I mean, Glorfindel is just as brave. And Haldir is equally humorous and playful (in the book, anyways. His movie depiction leans more toward proud and arrogant). There are the other fair Elves in Tolkien's world for us to focus our attention on. Right? 'Nay' would be my reply to that question. Legolas is in a class of his own. I will admit without shame that he was the first love of my life when I first read the books in middle school, and he is still very dear to me even now, as I am going through my last year in college. Why I was drawn to him will be a mystery, since he is such a minor character in the book. Yet I could not ignore the depth at which Tolkien developed his character. His actions showed the wisdom of his great years, though he also has the endearing naive curiosity of youth. Never once did he refer to his title as the Prince of Mirkwood, and in doing so, he shows us his desire to be considered an equal among others. Light-hearted he remained in the trilogy, even to the extent of making a game out of the battle of Helm's Deep with Gimli. Which brings me to another point. His friendship with Gimli really shows how he is able to look past traditional prejudices and see things in a different light. To me, Legolas represents all things that are good in life. He is certainly a prince among elves, and I am certain that he would hold a special place in my heart for always."- Earwen "Why Legolas? Because he is such an interesting character. In the books you can tell there is more to him than what is on the surface, and somehow Orlando Bloom managed to pull it off in the movies. His loyalty, sarcasm, and light-hearted sense of humor draw many fans. He is different from his friends because he is set apart by his immortality, but tries to ignore it most of the time. He is kind, respectful and a reliable person to have around"- Jazie "Legolas always was my favorite character even before I saw the movies (though I have to say Orlando Bloom did an amazing job portraying him). He seemed to be such a mystery since so little was told about him. He also seemed to be one of the few elves that cared what happened to Middle Earth and who showed some consideration for mortals. He agreed to go with the fellowship, even though Mirkwood was having its own battle. He put his differences aside and befriended Gimli, son of Gloin. This couldn't have been easy considering Gloin was imprisoned by Thranduil. He is also extremely loyal to his companions. He was willing to follow Aragorn anywhere and even ignored his sea-longing to stay on ME with his mortal companions until their passings. He was also an amazing warrior and the way Tolkien describes some of his fight scenes is absolutely beyond words."- dark of stars "I like Legolas because first of all I think he is so pure hearted and noble. He drew me to him the first time I saw "The Fellowship of the Ring". It may had been the CG animation but I didn't care. He has a child-like innocence but also has the wisdom of many years. I saw the movie before I read the books, but I love the way Orlando Bloom played him. He betrayed his strength, wisdom, and humor very well."- Anonymous |
