"Why Legolas? There's something about him that makes me so free (if you know what I mean, well if not then in other words....he makes feel happy in a way that you wouldn't understand, I think.) Plus he loyal, understanding, has seen things in a diffrent way --like with Gimli, he looks grouchy all the time but in truth Gimli's can be soft hearted as well. And another thing is that Orlando Bloom portrated him so well that it made me wanna read the book(s) again."- Eli "Why Legolas? From the first time I read LOTR, in 1978 or 1979, he was my favourite character. Every time I re-read it subsequently, he was still my favourite character. He is simply wonderful. Legolas, for so many of the reasons others gave above. I read the book 3 times before seeing the film, and yes, Orlando Bloom was excellently chosen to portray Legolas. He is perfect. Legolas and Orlando, Orlando in Legolas. But Legolas would still be my favourite, no matter who played him."- Anushka "I was raised surrounded by everything Tolkien; my father is a die-hard fanatic of the books, and he began reading them to me before I could even talk. As I grew older, and an understanding of the story began to form in my mind, Legolas was the one who captured me, for reasons that I have yet to completely fathom myself. Despite the fact that he is a somewhat minor character in the books, I was drawn by his loyalty and his bravery; this was the Elf who shot down a Nazgul with the bow of Lórien, this was the Elf that defied the general custom of his people and forged a great and undying friendship with a Dwarf. I think that, to me, he represents youth and beauty that has yet to be fully tainted by time and prejudice. He is naive and yet wise, elegant and brave, unquestioningly loyal, full of merriment and yet touched by the sadness of a being who knows his time is coming to an end. The combination of his qualities made him an irresistable character to me, and I must admit with only a small amount of chagrin that Legolas was the first love of my life, and he has never faded from my mind. When I saw him represented by Orlando Bloom in the movies, I wasn't disappointed at all :)"- Lómiel "He possesses a charismatic lure that draws you towards him, because he is an Elf, and that is beauty in itself, but more so because he is deadly and yet so attuned to the aura of the world around him... Well, in the book he stands as a desert oasis. He certainly stands apart from the other characters, probably because, as an Elf, he possesses relatively little faults (or none). Fine. Orlando Bloom made Legolas not only wicked cool with his bow and arrow, but graceful, haunting, and pretty damn hot."- Ellwyn "Okay, let's get al the 'Orlando Bloom is hot' stuff out of the way -- he is indeedy what drew me, a non-Tolkien fan of massive proportions, to not only Legolas but into the world of Tolkien as a whole. In the movie, Legolas' presence adds such a wonderful counterbalance of beauty and grace and simple otherworldliness to a story that was filled with harshness and struggle. He's just...really easy to look at, isn't he? ;) But I think Book Legolas also offers those same qualities, but with a dose more of humanity than the other elves. Sure, prominent elves like Elrond, Gil-galad, and Glorfindel provide their own intrigue -- they are almost like warrior-gods on earth -- but Legolas as a character doesn't have the weight of age or reputation. Fans of his character seem to love him for his character itself, instead of simply for the magnificence of his accomplishments. In any case, that's why I like him. He seems like an elf I'd like to hang out with." - Tai |
